According to a report from the Department of Information Security, fraud masquerading as services for Facebook such as increasing interactions and recovering accounts is one of the 24 most common forms of fraud as of the first half of 2023. So how to recognize and avoid this scam? Let's Anti-Phishing (CLĐ) learn more through the article below.

I. The situation of taking advantage of the provision of Facebook services to appropriate property

In recent years, Facebook has been one of the most popular social networks in Vietnam. This platform is not only used for personal needs but also for other commercial purposes.

Many Facebook accounts have been used by individuals for many years, or are used for trading and business, and have high reputation and become "expensive". Some scammers have used many tricks to take over these accounts for the purpose of appropriating property. For many objective and subjective reasons, "hacked" account owners will find many ways to get their accounts back. At this time, they continue to become easy prey for scammers masquerading as Facebook takeback service providers.

In November 2021, a fraudster was brought to trial by the Hanoi People's Court for taking advantage of trust to appropriate property. This subject used many excuses to ask the victim to transfer money to get back the account, secure new Facebook, re-hack the account..., thereby appropriating the victim's money of more than 1.1 billion VND.

II. Signs and tricks of fraud

Fraudsters often use the following tactics:

  • Find Facebook account information:
  • Scammers seek to collect information about the target Facebook account they want to scam.
  • Fraudsters can use methods such as email phishing, fake websites or using malicious software to steal information.
  • Fake account retrieval service:
  • Create a fake website or send fake emails to Facebook users, or proactively message Facebook users, claiming that they are an account recovery service and can help victims recover lost accounts .
  • Appropriation of accounts or assets:
  • Request sensitive personal information such as username, password, phone number, email address, OTP code, or credit card information to verify identity and perform account retrieval.
  • Or force the victim to pay a deposit first and when the goal is achieved, the scammer blocks the conversation with the victim or erases all traces.

III. How to prevent property appropriation

To avoid becoming bait or a victim of scammers, you should pay attention to the following issues:

  • Avoid sharing login information:
  • Do not share your Facebook account login information with anyone or any service.
  • Facebook never asks you for your login information through email, text, or other forms of communication.
  • Use official communication channels:
  • If you have problems with your Facebook account, please use Facebook's official communication channel for support.
  • This may include using Facebook's Help and Support page or contacting Facebook via the communication channels they provide on their official website.
  • Check the URL and website:
  • When you need to visit Facebook's website or any related website, be sure to check the URL to ensure that you are accessing the official Facebook website.
  • Note that fake websites may have similar URLs but can lead to scams.
  • Set a strong password and change it regularly:
  • Use strong passwords, including upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters.
  • Make sure you change your password regularly and don't use the same password for multiple accounts.
  • Enable two-factor verification:
  • Use two-factor verification on your Facebook account.
  • This requires you to provide additional information (commonly a verification code sent via mobile phone or email when logging into your account from a new device).
  • Enabling two-factor verification increases security and reduces the possibility of fraud.
  • Be wary of suspicious texts and emails:
  • Always be wary of messages or emails you receive with content related to getting your Facebook account back.
  • Phishers often use methods of infiltrating and appropriating personal information by forging notifications from Facebook.
  • If in any doubt, double-check the information and verify it from trusted sources before proceeding.
  • Use anti-malware and security software:
  • Make sure you install and update anti-malware and security software on your device.
  • This will help detect and prevent malware and phishing tools from attacking your Facebook account.
  • Limit personal information on social networks:
  • To reduce the possibility of being scammed, limit the disclosure of too much personal information on social networks, including Facebook.
  • Personal information that is too detailed can be used to attack and scam you.
  • Update and capture security information from Facebook:
  • Stay tuned for notifications and security updates from Facebook.
  • Facebook often provides information about new security measures and how to prevent scams.
  • By capturing this information, you can increase the security of your account.
