According to a report from the Information Security Department, fraud by calls using DeepFake and DeepVoice technology is one of the 24 most common forms of fraud as of the first half of 2023. So how to recognize and avoid this scam? Let's Anti-Phishing (CLĐ) learn more through the article below.

I. Current status of fraud using DeepFake and DeepVoice

Since artificial intelligence products were born, a series of scams taking advantage of these technologies have also appeared. Since the beginning of 2023, calls using DeepFake and DeepVoice technology to impersonate scams have increased sharply in Vietnam. This is an extremely sophisticated and dangerous new scam using artificial intelligence technology and attacking the victim's trust.

DeepFake, DeepVoice (or DeepFake Voice) are technologies that apply artificial intelligence (AI) to create audio, image and video technology products that fake real-life objects with very high accuracy. Based on a real-life person's face and voice image file, Deepfake will use algorithms to recreate the face and voice to match the facial expressions and expressions of another person; then create a video that completely impersonates the real-life object.

After creating a video impersonating an object, the scammer will use them to scam the victim's acquaintances and proceed to appropriate property.

Deepfake is a threat to the integrity and trustworthiness of videos and images. It can be used not only for online fraud but also for other purposes such as political attacks, creating fake news or destroying the reputation of others. Governments and organizations must also find measures to respond to this problem by providing solutions to detect and prevent deepfake abuse.

II. Identifying characteristics and fraud tactics

Most of these online scams target financial fraud. So when you receive calls related to financial content, you should be alert to confirm further.

Calls using DeepFake technology for fraud will often have the following characteristics:

  • Call time is usually very short, only a few seconds
  • The face lacks emotion and is quite "inert" when speaking, or the posture looks awkward and unnatural, or the direction of the head and body in the video are not consistent with each other.
  • The character's skin color in the video is unusual, the lighting is strange, and the shadows are not in the right place. This can make the video look very fake and unnatural
  • Sound is also a possible problem in video. The sound will not be consistent with the image, there will be a lot of noise lost in the clip, or the clip will have no sound
  • Interrupted in the middle, said there was no signal, weak signal...
  • Request a money transfer where the transfer account is not that of the person making the call

To achieve their goals, scammers often use the following tactics:

  • Collect information
  • Scammers collect the target person's personal information from different sources. This may include name, phone number, address and other information
  • Create fake voices and videos
  • Scammers use DeepVoice technology to create a fake voice, similar to that of the target person. This technology allows them to reproduce the target person's voice and intonation in a very realistic way
  • They also use DeepFake technology based on the target's images and videos to recreate the target's face and expressions.
  • Make scam calls
  • Scammers use fake voices to make phone calls or use fake videos to video call victims
  • Scammers often use scam tactics and scenarios to persuade victims to take the actions they want
  • Fraud and property appropriation
  • Scammers use a fake voice to ask the target person to provide sensitive personal information, such as credit card numbers, OTP codes, or bank account information.
  • They use this information to appropriate the target person's assets
  • Create surprise and danger
  • Scammers often use threatening messages or create emergency situations to make the target person panic and not think twice before taking actions as requested by the scammer.

III. How to recognize and prevent

The key issue in this scam is awareness.Identity verificationBEFORE comply with any request from the other party, especially requests to transfer money, provide personal information or some other sensitive action.

If you receive any of the above requests, first verify the caller's identity by asking for address information, a contact phone number, or contacting them again through another trusted channel. This should apply even if the other person claims to be a relative and wants to borrow money from you.

If you receive an urgent request to transfer money, in addition to verifying your identity, you should:

  • Carefully check the account number to which the money transfer is requested. If it is a strange account, it is best not to proceed with the transaction
  • If the call is from someone claiming to represent the bank, hang up and call the bank directly to confirm whether the call was actually made by the bank or not.
  • If your voice or video calls have poor quality or flicker, you should be suspicious of the caller and the authenticity of the call.

In addition, to prevent and prevent this scam from causing damage to yourself, your loved ones, and everyone around you, you should:

  • DO NOT provide sensitive information

  • When encountering a threatening call or emergency situation, stay calm and consider carefully before taking the required actions.
