Although fraud is becoming globalized, the point of contact between the fraudster and the public is still largely influenced by local culture and primary communication channels. In the survey for Asia 2023 scam report, GASA and Gogolook conducted a survey of "common fraud channels" in 11 Asian countries. Let's Anti-Phishing (CLD) learn more about this study in more detail.

GASA and Gogolook have identified common scenarios where scams are hidden, including emails, social networks, SMS, instant messaging apps, forums, phone calls, online shopping platforms, and more. online, digital advertising, dating apps and physical channels.

Respondents were asked to select which of these mediums they had encountered fraudulent information in the past year. This data helps pinpoint areas of concentrated fraud activity in different regions and informs local strategies to prevent fraud.

Looking at the survey results, “phone calls” and “SMS” continue to be the most frequently exploited fraud channels across Asia, occupying the top two positions in 8 out of 11 regions.

Among these regions, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Vietnam have more than 75% of the population receiving scam calls, while the Philippines, South Korea and Indonesia have more than 75% of people receiving scam SMS messages. Other channels such as “instant messaging applications”, “social networks” and “email” also followed closely. Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia each have over 50% populations experiencing scams on instant messaging apps.

In Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, China and Indonesia, more than 25% of the population have encountered social media scams. Japan, South Korea and the Philippines had 25% of people receiving phishing emails. Hong Kong and Singapore are unique in that more than half of their populations have experienced scams across all three major channels: phone calls, text messages and instant messaging apps.
