Pirated websites: Malware traps hidden behind the word "free"“

Watching new movies, following late-night football matches, downloading expensive licensed software… many people choose the “free” option on pirated websites. But behind that “free” label often lies malware, account loss, and the exposure of personal data. Pirated websites not only violate copyright but also provide fertile ground for malware and scams. According to the study “Consumer Risk from Piracy in Southeast Asia” by Dr. Paul Watters, published in July 2025 by the Alliance for Creative and Entertainment (ACE) (surveying 5 countries, including Vietnam), accessing pirated websites exposes users to an average of 22 times higher risk of malware infection compared to legitimate websites, and in some cases up to 65 times higher on peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms. The study also found that nearly three-quarters (721 TP3T) of pirated websites contain malware or scams, and 951 TP3T of advertisements on them contain malicious content. 

The scary thing is that victims are often completely unaware. Just one accidental click on an advertisement or a "download movie" button can compromise the device, stealing personal information or bank account details.

2. Signs to identify a suspicious pirated website

You should stop immediately if you experience the following signs:

• The ads are everywhere, and pop-ups keep popping up. There are tons of "Download now" buttons, pop-up windows, and clicking on any of them redirects you to a different page. 
• Pressing "play" takes me to a strange website., These are often gambling sites, adult content sites, or fake websites. 
• You'll need to download additional apps, browser extensions, or media players to continue watching. This is often a cover for spyware. 
• While I was watching, it prompted me to log in to my social media account. Many people followed this advice and lost their accounts, exposing their personal data. 
• You will be asked to enter your bank card information to "register" or "verify". No decent movie streaming platform would do that. 
• Be sure to disable your antivirus software before downloading or extracting the file. This is almost always a sure sign of malware. 
• The domain name is strange and constantly changing. If the old site is blocked, change the domain name and automatically redirect users. 

3. How to protect yourself

The good news is you don't need to be tech-savvy to protect yourself. With just a few simple habits, you can block most of the risks from pirated websites:

• Prioritize mainstream platforms. This is the most reliable way; the cost is much lower than losing your account or money in your card.
• Never turn off your antivirus software. to download or run anything.
• No social media login, no card information entry. On movie streaming sites, download pirated software.
• Do not install any unfamiliar apps, extensions, or media players. as the website requires.
• Use an ad blocker. To reduce the risk of accidentally clicking on malware hidden in advertisements.
• Beware of cheap, pirated set-top boxes. These types of devices often fail to meet security standards and are easily exploited to attack entire home networks. 
• Enable two-factor authentication. For important accounts, update your devices regularly.

4. What should I do if I've accidentally accessed it?

Calmly follow these steps: disconnect from the network, scan the entire device with reputable antivirus software, and uninstall any newly installed apps or extensions. Then, from another clean device, Change the passwords for important accounts (bank, email, social media) and log out of any unfamiliar login sessions. If you suspect your card information has been compromised, block your card and report it to the bank immediately.
